The paytable

Wins need three or more of the same symbol on one of the 15 paylines, starting from the leftmost reel. Pays are multiples of the total bet, so at $1 a spin, 20x is $20.

Wild, VS and the scatters

Wild

A sheriff’s badge marked WILD. It can land on any reel and stands in for all ten regular symbols. It does not substitute for VS or for the scatters. In The Great Train Robbery every wild that lands sticks for the rest of the round.

VS

When it would complete a win, VS expands to fill its reel, turns wild and carries a multiplier between 2x and 100x. Several VS reels in one win add their multipliers together. It is the reason the game’s big numbers exist; the VS guide covers it in full.

Scatters

There are three: Train Robbery, Duel and DEAD. Three or more of the same kind trigger The Great Train Robbery, Duel at Dawn or Dead Man’s Hand.

Dead Man’s Hand symbols

During the collect phase of Dead Man’s Hand only three symbols land: wilds, a multiplier symbol (a gun cylinder with a yellow plus) and blank placeholder cards showing skulls. See the bonus games guide.

What the numbers mean in practice

The base paytable is modest. The best regular line pays 20x, and the most common wins, three card ranks, pay a tenth of the bet. Without VS, this would be a modest paytable.

The VS multipliers are what change that. Five money bags pay 10x; put a 25x VS reel under the same line and it pays 250x. A full screen of VS turns every line into five wilds at 20x each and multiplies the lot, which is how a 20x top line becomes a 12,500x win.

Look and sound

Bigwinboard describes the 5x5 grid set outdoors “as the sun smoulders over twisted trees and a barbed-wire fence”, a heavier, bleaker mood than most Western slots. SlotCatalog calls the soundtrack a modernised take on classic Western scores; VegasSlotsOnline hears spaghetti Western. AboutSlots thought the background looked a lot like Genndy Tartakovsky’s Samurai Jack.
